2. Historical Background

Delhi has a rich and layered history dating back over 2,500 years. It has served as the capital for several empires and dynasties.

• Ancient Period: Delhi was known as Indraprastha during the Mahabharata era, believed to be established around 1400 BCE.
• Medieval Period: It gained prominence under the Delhi Sultanate (13th to 16th centuries) and later under the Mughal Empire. Several dynasties including the Tughlaqs, Khiljis, and Lodhis ruled from Delhi.
• Mughal Era: Delhi flourished under the Mughals, especially during Shah Jahan’s rule, who built Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi, with landmarks like the Red Fort and Jama Masjid.
• British Era: After the decline of the Mughals, the British made Delhi their capital in 1911, shifting it from Calcutta.
• Post-Independence: Delhi became the capital of independent India in 1947, and was declared a Union Territory in 1956. In 1991, it was given special status as the National Capital Territory.
